Musicians in the country over the weekend held a solidarity walk against the abduction and killing of people with albinism.

Speaking during the march in Lilongwe, Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM) President Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango said as musicians they cannot be silent while people with albinism are losing their lives.

“As musicians in the country we are bitter and we are joining the bandwagon of people speaking against the killing and abduction of people with albinism. We are happy to see people reacting positively, they have come to listen to the messages we have carried, to walk with us and fight together in making sure that Malawi should remain a peaceful country and that people should live freely including those with albinism,” he said

Mhango also described music as a mindset changer saying apart from entertaining it can also inform and educate.

“As musicians, we believe that we are one of the strongest tools in the land, the voice that is carried by a musician is more powerful than anyone else. If u want to deliver a message of any kind, music is very powerful, that is why we are here fighting against the killing of our friends and this is just the beginning, many events are coming to end this act completely,” Mhango added

Minister of Sports and Culture Grace Chiumia also joined the musicians where among other things she said government is working tirelessly to curb the malpractice.

Chiumia also commended musicians for showing team spirit during the march.

Skeffa Chimoto, Lulu, Symon and Kendal, Henry Masamba, Stanley Nthenga, Bon Kavala Banda, Andy Seko, Maxwell Olloto, Farai Chazima, Kafita Nursery Choir, Great angels Choir, Kamuzu Barracks Gospel Singers and Martha Mituka were some of the notable faces during the march.

The march started at the centre of Lilongwe Township, Game Complex while speeches were made at Wullian Shop then Kawale Market and finally at Kamuzu Institute for Sports where people later dispersed peacefully.
