Road accidents claim 2 lives in Mangochi

A man has died after being involved in a road accident at Chowe Hills along Namwera-Mangochi road.

According to Mangochi Police deputy spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi, the man was a passenger in a Nissan UD lorry 8 tonner registration number BLK 4282 which was being driven by 25 year-old Hussein Machemba and was coming from the direction of Namwera heading to Mangochi along the Bakili Muluzi Highway.

road accidentDaudi added that the lorry, which was loaded with 250 bags of maize and had four passengers on board, was descending Chowe Hills when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

“One male passenger sustained head and internal injuries and died while receiving treatment at Mangochi District Hospital and other passengers escaped with minor injuries,” said Daudi.

Police were yet to identify the deceased at press time.

In a related development, a 35 year-old man identified as Dube James of Likanga village T/A Nankumba in Mangochi was killed after being hit by a vehicle on Monday at Nantchengwa Trading Centre along Monkeybay-Mangochi road.

According to Daudi, the motor vehicle which hit James was being driven by 56 year-old Peter Mwanguku who was coming from the direction of Monkey Bay heading to Mangochi.

Upon reaching Nantchengwa Trading Centre, Mwanguku tried overtaking another car in front of him but unfortunately his car bumped into James and another cyclist who were heading to Monkeybay.

“James died on the spot after he sustained a head injury,” Daudi said. The other cyclist was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital where he was said to be responding well to treatment.
