Woman arrested for buying bones of albinos

Police in Machinga district have arrested a 43 year-old woman who wanted to buy bones of a person with albinism.

The woman, Mary Gundo, hired two men to get for her bones of a person with albinism or bones of a person who died of leprosy so that she could buy.

The two however only found bones of person who died of leprosy and were apprehended by the police after being found with the bones.

Albinos MalawiAfter interrogation, the two men told police that they wanted to sell the bones to Gundo.

“The woman approached the two suspects with a list of old currency but at the end of the list there were acronyms and when the two asked the woman on phone about the acronyms she revealed that those words mean bones of an albino or bones of a leprosy man and the last word meant ivory,” said Machinga Police Public Relations Officer Davie Sulumba.

He added that the two men tried their best until they found bones of a leprosy man. The first two suspects pleaded guilty to the charges laid against them in court and the case is yet to be concluded.

Meanwhile, Gundo has been charged with the offence of conspiracy to commit a felony which is contrary to section 404 of the penal code. She hails from Kamkawu Village, TA Nsamala in Balaka.
