The Malawi Government says it is optimistic that that the Shire-Zambezi Waterway project will recommence since President Peter Mutharika has been having talks with presidents from Zambia and Mozambique.

Minister of Transport and public works Malison Ndau made the remarks and added that the project will restart after the three presidents meet again.

“President Peter Mutharika has been meeting Presidents of Zambia and Mozambique to discuss the way forward on the project and we believe the project will recommence,” said Ndau.

He also disclosed that the three leaders will meet again and expressed hope that after the next meeting everything will be in order.

The Shire-Zambezi Waterway project was initiated by the late Bingu wa Mutharika who wanted to change Malawi’s status as a landlocked country. The former president claimed that the port will reduce transport costs and create jobs.

The project however stalled after Malawi’s neighbours expressed concerns over lack of a feasibility study.

But when he ascended to power, President Peter Mutharika vowed to ensure that his brother’s dream sees the light of the day.

  1. Our current leadership must remember this;the mozambican police, smacked 4 envoys that were sent to make afollow up on so the so called barge, that was supposed to bring bags of fertiliser during the innauguration session,i remember even the authorities said only 2 districts of Mozambique will benefit from the port, they also said late Muthalika did not consult Mozambican govt for the shire zambezi water way,it is also alleged that our shire river, where it connects with Zambezi river, there is amountain where people plant alot of crops, either way,the engineers said the water we have is only for aburge, however,it was anice dream for the late Muthalika,bt it will take time, some people once said the money that was used for the foundation of the port,is eguivalent to 7 football stadiums,i salute the late Muthalika for his nice dreams bt there are alot of challenges facing Malawians,eg,huge unemployment, failed economy, mass cry from civil servants,Shortage of medications in hospitals, hiv aids issues, etc,

  2. That was his dream not for the people of Mozambique. Kulota saloterana and as far as I know,Mozambique will never pave the way for Malawi to live in a such dream. The president should rather sleep and dream of something else instead of embezling our hard earned taxes on something which will obviously not come to pass. We want a railway line which is already there, just repair it and Nsanje will forever thank you for that.

    1. Kkkk, dead mind you say? Either way, this is my opinion. Opinions are like ass-holes and I believe that as a citizen of Malawi I am entitled to one as well. So go to hell if you are too lazy to contribute to this debate. You can’t dictate my mind since I am too wise to bow down to your intelligence. Further more,I am from Nsanje and I know what we want. This is for you #JekelKhalaniLwazi

  3. I wish this project could come to pass. It is a venture that has the potential to turn around the economy of this land. However, there is need to complete the environmental impact assessment. More so, the government of Mozambique should be engaged at every stage of this project. Zambezi passes through Mozambique. In fact, the Indian ocean, which will link the shire Zambezi water way is a big source of revenue for the Mozambiqan government. For this reason, there’s need to engage Mozambique the more. She cant just allow Malawian cargo to pass thru her territory without some sort of agreements. This might threaten her economy

  4. God uses people who who fear him to have vision. But when someone is doing great things devil’s are not happy because he noz that there will be good outcome. Mind you, no matter how long it will take God will fulfill this. In Jesus mighty name.

  5. Malawians must know this:soon after its innauguration,i mean, the Nsanje World inland port, some top Leaders from Mozambique told journalists in Nsanje, that their country will not benefit from this develpmt, hence no need for them to support this project, imagine, during the innauguration,in oct 2010,not even aMinister from Mozambique attended the function,it is an important project to aMalawian govt in as far as boosting the economy is concerned,we need to resolve our differences first with Maputo, then it will work. The port was there be4,The white pipo in those days, used the same port,bt it will take time, the biggest part is in Mozambique,Mozambicans are jealousy,bt lets envolve them in our discussions,

  10. Well, ask the expert, me, it will never work. Some people gave it a go ahead just to earn more allowances as they kept commuting btwn lilongwe and nsanje. People built mansions out of that non starter. Talk of paying taxes.
