A political expert in the country has advised government to conduct an inquiry on reports that former President Bingu wa Mutharika left billions of Kwacha in foreign accounts.
Happy Kayuni who is a political analyst based at Chancellor College said government should set up an independent body in order to find out the truth on the matter.
Last week, Member of Parliament for Mzimba West Harry Mkandawire told the August House that he had evidence to the effect that Mutharika had K61 billion stashed in foreign accounts when he died.
Mkandawire called on government to investigate the issue and bring back the money, saying it belongs to Malawians.
However, government spokesperson Patricia Kaliati trashed the accusations saying they are unrealistic and baseless.
“It is unrealistic to bring such matters now as there had been another government before this current one and they are bringing this because they know the late cannot speak to defend themselves,” said Kaliati.
But Kayuni said there is need for government to do an extensive investigation to prove if Mkandawire’s claims are true or not.
“This is a serious allegation so it needs an extensive investigations and I think government should set up an independent body to inquire the matter,” said Kayuni.
He added that if they can do an inquiry it will show how serious government is and taxpayers will know if the claims are true or false.
