National-shame Flames arrive in Malawi without heartbroken Mtawali

Depleted Malawi National Football Team (the Flames) landed safely through Chileka International Airport on Friday afternoon.

At exactly 14:30 PM, the plane carrying our flag carriers landed at Chileka without head coach Enerst Mtawali who was left behind in South Africa.

With sunglasses covering their eyes, the Flames players never looked concerned with how they underperformed in Zimbabwe for the African Cup of Nations qualifier before proceeding to Namibia for Cosafa Cup tournament where they displayed another shameless display of non-footballing skills.

Speaking to the media, assistant coach Nswazurimo Ramadhan blamed Malawi’s performance on fate and his misfiring strikers who wasted plenty of opportunities against Angola in the opening match.

“Fate took part in the defeat to Lesotho because we did everything in our power to win the match but failed. Our display was very good but in the end, we lost; so, fate took its part.”

“Our strikers are also partly to blame for missing plenty of chances against Angola. Had it been that we scored more goals on that day, we couldn’t have played under pressure against Lesotho on Thursday but we lost because we needed goals hence playing under pressure,” he said.

However, Ramadhan drew some positives from the tournament.

“All what we need to do is to sit down with Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and map the way forward because we have identified a team through the tournament but it will depend on how best we can do to make this possible,” he said.

Since its inception, the Flames have never won Cosafa Cup but came close to winning it in 2002 and 2003 where they reached the finals but eventually lost to South Africa and Zimbabwe respectively.

At the just ended tourney, Malawi finished second in the group with 6 points they accumulated by beating Angola and Mauritius before losing to Lesotho.
