The last time Malawi lost to Lesotho was in 1979 in a friendly match played in Blantyre but that record ended on Thursday night.
Before yesterday’s meeting, Malawi had registered ten victories in all competitions against Lesotho, booting them twice in the Cosafa Cup in 2005 and 2008 respectively.
On Thursday, Ernest Mtawali became the first Flames coach in 37 years to lose to Lesotho.
Malawi were able to keep possession but unlocking Lesotho’s defence in a match where a victory was a must for Mtawali’s boys.
Their opponents were composed, disciplined at the back and attacked with caution no wonder they got their goal with some few minutes left on the clock.
However, it was a day to forget for Mtawali who gave away a record that has been kept by previous coaches.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder’s tenure as Flames head coach is a mixed one, registering five victories in more than ten games. He has also failed to defend Cosafa Plate that was won by his predecessor Young Chimodzi last year.
It is still not known as to whether Football Association of Malawi (FAM) will offer him a new deal or not once his contract expires next month.
Malawi finished the tournament as runners up with 6 points from two victories they registered against Angola and Mauritius.
