Mlenga Mvula: Says ruling has set precedent.

Speaking to Malawi24 on Thursday, Judiciary spokesperson Mlenga Mvula said the ruling is “practical” on the land and it will help put down the malpractice.

“The Judge emphasized on the maximum sentence on attempted murder which is contrary to section 404 of the penal code, it is a way of dealing with the vice in the country. “It can happen also that the judge can give death sentence it is also practical in Malawi when someone has been found guilty on murder case,” said Mvula.

Mvula added that Judges can sometimes give years as a sentence to attempted murder convicts depending on the mitigation in court.

Madise: Made the ruling.

The High Court in Mzuzu City made an outstanding ruling to one Samson Kaumba to spend his entire life behind bars for attempting to kill 11 year old Morton Juma- a young boy living with albinism.

Judge Madise’s ruling follows the controversial issue of killing people with albinism on a “myth” that their body parts can break chains of poverty.

Since 2014, over 18 murder cases have been reported and 14 cases involving kidnapping of albinos are in the records while three are still missing and 28 graveyards of people with albinism have been tampered with in different circumstances.
