Police in the country’s eastern region of Balaka are keeping in custody one of the district’s village headman for raping and impregnating a mentally challenged girl.
According to deputy police publicist in the district Gerald Sumaili, the rapist has been identified as Yohani Mzera who until his arrest was village headman Mlopwa.
Sumaili said the rapist found the girl at one of the boreholes in the area where she was fetching water. The wicked chief then dragged her to a nearby where he raped her.
After sexually assaulting the girl, the rapist gave her money and told her not to tell anyone about the ordeal. The girl did as instructed but her parents grew suspicious that something had happened to their daughter after noticing a change in her appearance and behaviour.
They later asked her why she seemed different and she revealed that the shameless village headman had raped her. The matter was later reported to Balaka police who went to the suspect’s house and arrested him.
A medical report conducted at Balaka district hospital showed that the girl is four months pregnant.
Mzera hails from the area of Traditional Authority Sawali in the district and is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges of defilement of an imbecile contrary to section 139 of the penal code.
