Gaba is back: Bags hat trick as Flames beat Angola

Gabadinho Mhango scored a hat trick to inspire Malawi National Football Team to a comfortable 3-nil victory over an Under 20 Angola National Football Team in the on-going Cosafa Castle Senior Challenge Cup in Namibia on Sunday night.

The Flames mentor Ernest Mtawali fielded a strong side no wonder they were the favorites to win the encounter.

Malawi had more chances in the opening minutes through Chiukepo Msowoya who saw his header coming off the upright from an Isaac Kaliyati’s cross.

Minutes later, Mhango had another chance from Kaliyati’s cross but his timing was poor as he headed off the target.

At the other end, the Angolans saw their goal disallowed for offside before missing another chance when Harry Nyirenda cleared the ball before crossing the goal mouth to the disbelief of the Angolan head coach.

However, it was Malawi who took a lead just after the half hour mark.

Mhango’s header from a Stainley Sanudi’s free kick took a deflection before kissing the back of the net, 1-0.

The Flames should have added another goal but wasteful Msowoya headed over the bar from Kaliyati’s low cross drive.

Come second half, the Angolans were composed but Malawi used experience to control their midfield through Rafick Namwera and Joseph Kamwendo.

Mhango almost doubled his lead when released a thunderbolt only to miss the goal mouth with an inch.

Msowoya was having a bad day as he kept on misfiring from all angles.

Malawi doubled their lead through Mhango again.

This time it was a brilliant move from Namwera who released Mhango into the box before slotting past the advanced Angolan shot-stopper,2-nil.

Mtawali then brought in Muhamad Sulumba, Yamikani Fodya and Dalitso Sailesi for Msowoya, Francis Mulimbika and Gerald Phiri Jnr.

Mhango sealed his hatrick from the spot following a handball by Angola’s captain to make it 3-nil and after the end of the regulation time, it ended 3-nil.

Malawi will play Mauritius on Tuesday and a victory will automatically send them through to the quarter-finals of the cup.
