A thirteen year-old boy died on Monday after drowning in Mbavi River in Lilongwe.
Lilongwe Police station Assistant Public Relations Officer, Magret Selemani, identified the deceased as Anthony Square from Malowa village T/A Jalasi in Mangochi.
“The deceased is said to have gone out for a swim with friends at around 1 pm on the fateful day.
“After jumping into the river the boy went to the other side of the river where the water was diverted due to the construction of a bridge,” Selemani said.
Unfortunately, he failed to come out of the water but some people who were around the place managed to get him out.
The boy was then taken to Mbavi Health Centre where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Post-mortem conducted at Kamuzu Central Hospital established that he died due to suffocation.
Meanwhile police are appealing to parents to look and guard after their children where such constructions are taking place to prevent similar accidents.
May his soul rest in peace god be with family
