Machinga police on Sunday nabbed three men for possessing ivory worth millions of Kwacha.
Machinga police publicist Davie Sulumba said the suspects were found with ivory weighing 42 kilograms valued at 36 million Malawi Kwacha.
He said the suspects – James Mwera, 38, Mavuto Giniford, 18, and Dominic Siza Nyorongo aged 24 – were arrested for the offence of possesing ivory contrary to section 91 as read with section 110 of National Parks and Wildlife Act.
Sulumba told our reporter that they followed a tip by well-wishers that the suspects were keeping ivory and were offering them for sale.
“Police officers and game officers pretended to be buyers as they went to the house of James Mwera and found four pieces of ivory weighing 42 kilograms,” said Sulumba.
“They offered the pieces at a price of 55 thousand kwacha per Kilogram.”
James Mwera is from Amidu village, Mabvuto Giniford comes from Maluma village both in the area of traditional authority Liwonde of Machinga district while Dominic Nyirongo is from Dutie village, traditional authority Mzikubola of Mzimba district.
