Possession of firearm lands man in hot soup

Police in Machinga district are keeping in custody a 52 year-old man who was found keeping a rifle.

Machinga police public relations officer Davie Sulumba identified the man as Mofolo John. He further said the arrest was made following a tip.

“We followed it and we conducted a search in his house. We found a greener type of gun, two live ammunitions and 21 used ammunitions,” Sulumba explained.

gunThe man has since been charged with possessing an offensive weapon without licence, an offence which is contrary to section 12 of the firearms act.

In a related development, police in the district have nabbed 42 year-old White Makwacha for possessing ammunitions and medical drugs without documents which is contrary to section 5 of Firearms Act and section 35 of Pharmacy and Poisons Act.

According to Sulumba, police officers and game officers went to the house of Makwacha after suspecting him of being a poacher and they found two live ammunitions of AK47 gun kept in a bag.

“Assorted medical drugs were also found: 1000 tablets of Cotrimazole, 1000 tablets of Indocid, 100 tablets of Amoxylin,” Sulumba said.

He added by advising the general public to report to police any suspicious acts or weapons for security reasons.

John hails from Makaluka village traditional authority Sitola in Machinga district while White Makwacha is from Kalilima village in the area of traditional authority Kalembo in Balaka district.
