The Malawi Electoral Support Network (MESN) has urged the newly appointed commissioners of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to start work immediately.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi24, MESN board chairperson Steve Duwa said the commissioners need to start work soon in preparation for the 2019 general elections.

“As MESN we are delighted that the president has finally made the appointment as the law demands, we welcome them and promise to work with them as has been the case with previous commissions.

“We expect the new commission to settle down and start preparing for 2019 general elections, the Mchinji by-elections and any other by elections that may rise,” said Duwa.

Duwa added that the commission must also investigate reports of financial mismanagement at the electoral body as priority.

MESN had been calling for a speedy appointment of MEC commissioners arguing that the delay to have the new commissioners will affect the preparations for the 2019 elections.
