DPP plans to rig 2019 elections

The opposition People’s Party (PP) has faulted the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for dominating in the new management of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) arguing that it is a strategy to rig the 2019 election.

The recent appointment of MEC commissioners has seen DPP having four members, with United Democratic Front (UDF) having two while Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and PP have one each.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi24, PP spokesperson Ken Msonda said it is worrisome that DPP has more commissioners in the electoral body.

“It seems the 2019 elections rigging strategy by the ruling DPP has started, we have to correct these anomalies before things get off hand. Malawians are peace loving, we are the warm heart of Africa, we don’t want what is happening in Kenya to happen here, dzuka Malawi dzuka (wake up Malawi wake up),” said Msonda.

He however commended President Peter Mutharika for hiring a lean commission following the financial hiccups that have rocked the electoral body.

The DPP was no available for immediate comment as we went to press.

On his part, political analyst Joseph Chunga said the development will make Malawians lose trust in MEC.

“This was the time to restore trust to Malawians in MEC but people are to doubt the electoral body and the commission is to have tough time in preparing for the 2019 general elections,” said Chunga.
