The Ntchisi first grade magistrate court has sentenced a 34 year-old man to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for raping an 11 year-old girl.

According to Public Relations Officer for Ntchisi police station Sergeant Gladson M’bumpha, the convict is Cosmas Mphonde of Chikumbe village, T/A Malenga in Ntchisi district.

CourtThe court heard that on 15 April this year, the girl was at her friend’s house playing and in the course of playing her friend was called by her mother to wash plates. The girl decided to go home.

But on the way home, the wicked man dragged her into a maize garden where he forced himself on her.

Medical examinations at Ntchisi District Hospital showed that the girl was indeed raped.

Mphonde pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement and in her ruling First Grade Magistrate Dorothy Kalua sentenced him to 10 years with hard labour to deter would-be offenders.

In another ruling on Monday, the court sentenced 30 year-old Piason Nthimbo to eight years imprisonment with hard labour for committing the offence of burglary and theft.
