The Mchinji magistrate court has ordered that a 25 year-old woman should be remanded at Maula prison for insulting her cousin who is a person with albinism by saying that she is ‘money.’
According to Mchinji police public relations officer, Moses Kachawa Nyirenda, the accused has been identified as Zione Gabina Kangola who insulted 22 year-old Getrude Ulaya.
The publicist said the suspect told the victim she would have sold her had it been that she was her daughter saying on the black market she is the most expensive commodity, a development that did not go well with victim.
The girl later reported the matter to her parents who asked the woman to withdraw the remarks. The suspect refused to do so and the parents later reported the matter to the Mchinji police.
The suspect was then dragged to court and appeared before the Mchinji magistrate court on Friday, June 3.
However, the Mchinji first grade magistrate Rodwell Meja recused himself from handling the case saying it was a very serious crime considering the increase in cases of albino abductions and killings.
Meja later handed over the case to the chief resident magistrate court in the capital city of Lilongwe and gave the police a remand warrant to take the suspect to Maula prison pending trial.
Zione is expected to answer charges of intimidation and conduct likely to cause breach of peace. She comes from Tembwe village in the area of Traditional Authority Mulonye in the district.
