Teachers cry foul over unpaid three months salaries

Some teachers in the country have expressed concern to the government over unpaid three months’ salary.

According to one of the ODL 3 and IPTE 8 teachers, Mr Enock Malora, this is a very worrisome development to them.

He said the government need not to be doing this considering the state of things in the country due to economic crisis that has seen prices of most goods and services being hiked.

Teachers unpaid.
Teachers unpaid.

Malora said these teachers are meeting more challenges in as far as feeding their families is concerned saying most of them have no other alternative ways of getting money.

He added that the most challenging thing is that most of them were posted far away from their respective homes, a situation which he said has contributed to their suffering. He then wondered why government is doing this having in mind that the teachers stayed at home for more than a year after being told that the ministry was looking for enough funds for their payments when posted.

However, government through ministry of education, science and technology spokesperson, Manfred Ndovi, said it will respond to the raised concerns very soon.

  1. It just reminds me of a Nigerian movie i was watching two days ago where by a son was telling his father that he would like to be a teacher but the father’s response was Haaaaa! my son do you want to be a teacher whose reward is in heaven(Malawi government treat teachers like those who are abducting and killing people with albinism no difference at all)

  3. mmmm life is really tough. we are having enormous challenges with govt the govt’s silent gesture to us. Other institutions do offer their newly recruited staff atleast some amountt of cash as start pack but this govt esp to us teachers,it doesnt mind to our dare situation as if they offer us allowances. How can we offer high quality education to our learners while hungry? It is at this time where teachers in Malawi start develop laziness. kodi civil service reform imanemedwayi ndi imeneyi? pliz respond to our situation.

  4. Investing in education is a key to developing any nation. Japan is a very advanced nation in the world and one of their key strength lies on huge investment in education since post WWII. Their teachers at all levels are the best paid in their civil service and teaching profession is a very lucrative job which many youth do not hesitate to join. No wonder they have very productive citizens in various respective fields and careers and their nation remain outstanding in global industrialisation and technology development.

  5. GOVERNMENT HAS THE WEAKEST MONITORING SYSTEM ON WHO IS REALLY WORKING OR NOT, WITH THE SALARIES BEING SENT TO THE BANK WITHOUT CROSS-CHECKING PHYSICALLY ON THE GROUND. AS I AM WRITING NOW, I HAVE EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE THAT SOME OF THESE SO CALLED CRYING TEACHERS JUST WENT TO THE SCHOOLS THEY WERE POSTED TO SIGN EMPLOYMENT DOCUMENTS AND BANK INFORMATION BUT THEY LEFT IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT. SOME JOINED OTHER TRAINING INSTITUTIONS AND JUST WENT BACK TO REGISTER AND DISAPPEAR TO THEIR RESPECTIVE NEW TRAINING INSTITUTIONS JUST TO STEAL GOVERNMENT MONEY. PLEASE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, VERIFY FIRST BEFORE PAYING THESE TEACHERS OTHERWISE YOU WILL END UP PAYING GHOST TEACHERS. SOME ARE DOING NURSING, SOME ARE WITH TECHNICAL COLLEGES, SOME ARE DOING OTHER COURSES DIFFERENT FROM THE TEACHING JOB. I BEG GOVERNMENT TO PHYSICALLY VERIFY BEFORE EFFECTING ANY SALARY PAYMENT. ENOUGH OF THE CASHGATE SO FAR !!!!!
