…Court tells him to just apologize to victim’s family
A court in Nkhatabay in May this year told a convicted rapist who sexually abused a six year-old girl to just apologize to the victim’s family and escape a prison sentence.
Nkhatabay First Grade Magistrate Billy Ngosi also ordered the rapist, Lameck Banda, 19 to pay the family a fine of K300, 000. Ngosi made the ruling even though the country’s penal code provides that rapists can be given life imprisonment.
The family of the little girl, who was paralysed due to illness, have since protested the judgment and have branded it as an act of injustice.
The mother of the girl also felt that the ruling was an infringement of her daughter’s right to justice and said they received the money reluctantly.
“We were forced to collect K47, 000 from the total sum but we are yet to use even a tambala,” mother said. According to the mother, the ruling was an insult to the family and they now want justice to prevail. Meanwhile, the mother has asked activists to intervene in the matter.
