The National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) has applauded the ban on herbalists as a solution to curb the killings of people with albinism.

The development follows the Mzuzu High Court’s decision to ban witchdoctors as a solution to the killings of people with albinism in the country.

Following the verdict, the nurses’ body has applauded the ban arguing that tradition healers are fuelling the malpractice.

Ngoma: Commends the ban.

In statement signed by NONM President Dorothy Ngoma, the ban has been seen to be a positive step in stopping the killings of people living with albinism.

“We commend government for the steps taken to address the issue including the recent court ban on herbalists practicing in the country as they are believed to be fuelling the barbaric acts,” reads a depict of the statement available at Malawi24.

The nurses have since urged government to take “serious” measures to ensure the barbaric acts are put to an end.

“We implore upon the government to seriously beef up security for our nurse members and all people with albinism in the country so that they feel safe, secure and not discriminated against in their respective places of work.

“We call upon all Malawians to join hands in making our country a better place for our friends with albinism and everyone so that together we effectively contribute to national development,” reads the statement further.

However, Malawi human rights activist Timothy Mtambo condemned the ban arguing that the development will not end the killings in the country.
