Flames head coach Ernest Mtawali has apologized to Malawians following the 3-nil defeat to Zimbabwe in the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifiers on Sunday afternoon.

Mtawali’s boys were roasted at National Sports Stadium by the Warriors who were too good for the visiting side.

Before the match, Mtawali was very much optimistic of recording a result over the Warriors but everything went from bad to worse when the Flames conceded just 16 minutes into the half.

Speaking to the media in the aftermath of the defeat, the former Flames midfielder said he is now focusing on winning the Cosafa Castle Senior Challenge Cup to console Malawians who have been let down by the team.

“It’s unacceptable to play this way. I am apologizing to Malawians for this shameful defeat.

“I am now focusing on doing well at the Cosafa Castle Senior Challenge Cup in Namibia in order to console your heavy hearts,” said Mtawali.

The Flames are winless in Group L with 2 points and they are remaining with a single game at home in September against Swaziland.

The last time Malawi qualified for the Afcon was in 2010 in Angola where they recorded a 3-nil victory over Algeria before being sent packing by Angola and Mali.

The team will proceed to Namibia for the Cosafa tourney.

  50. Experience is the best teacher. Please share the techniques used in 1978/79 when the team did well. The coach might be good and the FAM President too let alone the players. These three components no level would surely want to lose and so they have a solution. My contribution therefore is at each level let them consult it’s predecessor, table’s are possible to be turned. I love my national team,so too my country .If they don’t have time call for the inputs in submissions at each level,this will surely work positively.

  315. Malawi National Team is just a mumble jumble type of a team. Look at the domestic league! Look at the crop of players we have! National Sports Council, FAM and Ministry of Sports behave like a silly guy who waits until when he is hungry before he can start organizing supplies for his meal. And it’s always too late. They can’t plan anything beyond one year or one farming calendar. Where do players for the Super league clubs come from? When we were doing well in 1970s and 80s we had a vibrant youth program and proper structures for football development. Remember, Cocacola Schools trophy? MBS Schools trophy? Those were competed for at zonal, district, regional and national levels. Mayor’s trophy? Youth ateams? Under 14? Under 17 and Under 21? Other countries have effective Football Academies, how about here in Malawi? And do we really think we can win games consistently? I personally don’t think so.
