Rape cases reduced in Machinga

Machinga district’s mission to reduce the rate of cases of sexual abuse has registered positive results as the district has recorded a 38 percent decrease in defilement and rape cases.

PoliceMachinga police public relations officer Davie Sulumba told Malawi24 that the success criteria is gradually being achieved.

According to Sulumba, the district recorded 40 cases of defilement in the months of January to April last year, whilst this year only 25 cases have been recorded in the same period, representing a 38 percent decrease.

“Awareness campaigns have helped us a lot, they are conducted from grassroots and most of them are done by community policing personnel,” Sulumba explained.

Machinga is one of the districts that records a high number of rape cases in the country, and the police spokesperson in the district said most of them are caused by cultural believes.
