Man who married 14 year-old girl jailed for rape

The Ntchisi first grade magistrate court has sentenced an 18 year-old man to six years imprisonment with hard labour for raping a 14 year-old girl.

The court heard that the convict raped the 14 year-old girl at Mdzuche village T/A Chilooko in the district.

CourtAccording to police prosecutor Fred Luhanga, the convict, Willard Paul, went to the girl’s village and took her as his third wife without the consent of the girl’s parents.

But after two weeks  the community policing members  were informed about the issue and they took the girl back to her parent’s house.

In mitigation the convict told the court to exercise lenience when passing the sentence as he has a sick mother at home in need of his attention.

But first grade magistrate Dorothy Kalua said Paul deserved a custodial punishment to deter other would be offenders.

She sentenced the convict to six years imprisonment with hard labour for difilement, an offence contrary to section 138 of the penal code.

Paul hails from Dzutche village T/A Chilooko in Ntchisi district.
