Police in Machinga district are keeping in custody a 32 year-old man for obtaining money by lying that he is a police recruiter.
Police in the district have confirmed the development to Malawi24 and identified the suspect as Ellard Sanudi who was until his arrest a clerk of T/A Nsanama. Sanudi committed the crime together with his friend who is currently at large.
Speaking to this publication on Thursday, Machinga police public relations officer Davie Sulumba said one of the victims Patrick Mayeso Nkhoma together with his 35 friends were invited to meet the suspect at T/A Nsanama’s headquarters for recruitment as police cadets.
“The suspects demanded 9500 kwacha from the victims and some deposited the money to the self-declared police officers’ mpamba and airtel money accounts,” Sulumba explained.
He added that the suspects blackmailed the victims that departure for the training centre will be on 30 May this year but the complainants were kept waiting till the end of the agreed date, a development which suprised them.
“We would like to advise the public that they should not be entinced in any way, for them to be recruited as police officers,” Sulumba advised.
Ellard Sanudi who will be answering the charge of obtaining money by false pretence which is contrary to section 319 of the penal code, comes from Nsanama village in the area of traditional authority Nsanama of Machinga district.
