The Malawi government through the ministry of education, science and technology has placed back over 600 public primary and secondary school teachers on the payroll system leaving other 400 teachers out of the list.

The ministry ruled out and deleted 1000 public primary and secondary school teachers last month from the payroll system as they were being suspected to be ghost workers.

According to the ministry’s publicist, Manfred Ndovi, the deletion of those teachers followed last year’s headcount and payroll audits conducted by the National Audit Office (NAO) aimed at eliminating ghost workers who are said to have been inflating government’s wage bill.

Ndovi said the remaining 400 teachers are expected to be placed on the payroll by the coming month end upon verification of their professional documents by the Auditor General.

“The 600 plus teachers are those that completed submission of documents the auditors were looking for by the time salaries were being processed. Some are still making submissions but since salaries have already been prepared they will be considered later,” said Ndovi.

However, Ndovi pointed out that all the affected teachers will not get their salary arrears unless they make claims.

He further acknowledged that the erroneous removal of the teachers from the payroll has affected service delivery in some schools as the affected teachers are constantly giving excuses.

Therefore, he has appealed for patience saying the ministry is still working on bringing all the victims back into the system.

Among the affected 1000 teachers were over 500 from Nsanje, 312 from Ntcheu, 60 from Mzuzu, 32 from Balaka, 25 from Blantyre and 10 from Lilongwe.

  1. There is no tracking mechanism of civil servants in Malawi! Ask the Ministry of Xaqeducation officials even the minister himself the statistics of teachers per grade, district, division, region etc They can’t give you details. Should we say all those teachers back on payroll are real? To me I suspect ghost teachers are also back on payroll

  4. The 400 left out could like those that have been giving lessons until late last week to those sitting for the 2016 Examinations.
