The Immigration department in Mchinji has netted 12 people from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for trying to settle in the district without authorization.
According to the district’s immigration publicist Andida Mando, the 12 Congo nationals were caught in Kaombe village in the district on Saturday night while they were looking for a place to settle.
Mando said the foreigners included seven children and five adults. He said villagers in the area were surprised to see the foreigners who were moving up and down the village looking for a place to settle.
Community policing members caught the immigrants and they handed them to the district’s immigration department.
The 12 admitted to have entered the country illegally but said they are running away from cruel soldiers in their nation who are brutally beating men for no reasons.
Reports from the publicist shows that the immigrants were left in the village by a truck driver who mercifully took them to Malawi but the foreigners did not ask why he left them there.
Meanwhile the immigrants have been taken to Ndzaleka refugee camp.

Malawi24 please use some creative journalism. How can refugees be arrested? Wouldn’t that contravene the UNHR convention of 1951, in which it defined refugees and outlined the rights of the displaced, as well as the legal obligations of States to protect them. The words you should have used are “12 illegal migrants netted in Mchinji”. Remember, there is a difference between an Asylum-Seeker, Refugee and illegal migrant.
