Malawians risk being killed in Mozambique

Malawians traveling to and through Mozambique risk of losing lives following clashes between Renamo and Mozambican government forces.

Truck drivers, business operators, and travellers to South Africa are among the groups of Malawians who usually pass through Mozambique.

Speaking to Malawi24 on Monday, a Malawian truck driver (name withheld) said he has witnessed people in the country being chopped to death.

mozambique-elections-2014The driver said he was on his way back to Malawi and his truck was loaded with clinker for cement processing when he was stopped by Renamo rebels after they blocked the road with lorries.

“Besides my truck there were small cars for people in Mozambique, they asked me where I am coming from (my country) and I saw them giving each other signs.

“Then one came at my front and started asking me questions in Chichewa and after that they told me to follow them and show them what was in my truck,” said the driver.

He added that the soldiers turned to the other group and after noting them to be Mozambicans the soldiers poured petrol on the vehicles and burnt the cars together with people inside.

“I have been lucky that am alive after I called my wife that I will be a deceased husband to her, they told me that they have spared my life because my country is keeping Mozambicans peacefully and it will be unfair for me (Malawian) to be killed,” added the driver.

A fortnight ago four Malawians were killed while three others suffered gunshot wounds after they were attacked by soldiers in Mozambique.

Malawi government through Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Francis Kasaila warned Malawians travelling to South Africa to avoid using the Tete Province route, saying it is highly insecure following the renewed fighting between the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) and Mozambique National Resistance (Renamo).

  6. I hope those intending to pass are aware of the risks of passing through Mozambique. It will be unfortunate and deliberate to use the route. Don’t claim that you weren’t informed.

  8. Mozambique is taking advantage because Malawi is landlocked country. Had it been that Malawi was next to SA Or having our own Port they wouldn’t do that. To be honest we struggle when we drive through. Koma tsiku lina tizabweza.

  10. Report factually and with FACTS.When you say Tete province ,which part of Tete province? It is not the whole of Mozambique or all of Tete where this id happening.Malawian,South African and Zimbabwean trucks and buses use the Zobue to Cuachamano route EVERYDAY with no incident yet it is in Tete province. All the imports into Malawi, how are they coming in using that route? Can you give 1 example of an incident that happened on this route? It is good to inform people but inform them CORRECTLY.Why do you not gather facts about the areas where the conflict is being experienced? The fact is not all of Mozambique is dangerous and not all of Tete even.Renamo bandits are mainly in Sofala and Manica provinces and in and around areas near Gorongosa and others. That is not all of Mozambique. These are the facts you need to give to people not just give blanket and empty reports. This driver you quoted, where was he stopped? Can you shed light?

  18. If they try to kill Malawians, they will have big problem that they never had b4.The problem of Mozambican government soldiers is the cowadness.Malawian soldiers managed to demolish young pioniers in no time, why not them?.If they are failling to restore peace, why don’t they ask other countries to help them b4 things got worse?.

    1. You don’t know what you are talking about. I had the same mind set when i was in Malawi. Now I am in Mozambique and understand things better. Ferelimo government is the worst. Renamo is always fighting for peace to restore the country to democracy. The people of Mozambique want Renamo. But they will never win, Why? because every system of the government has been ferelimolized. E.G the headmaster of every school is member of ferelimo, every head of department in govt is ferelimo, head of election…etc etc. For your information Mozambique has 9 provinces. out of the 9 Renamo worn 6 and ferelimo 3, but the end result was that ferelimo was the winner. Now the president of Renamo and the people of Mozambique are not happy with it. And is asking for dialogue which should have independent observers, but Ferelimo say they don’t want anybody outside their country, why? they know. There is more but let me stop here

  19. the solution is just avoiding those areas that are prone to clashes. there are certain areas in that country where business goes on as usual despite smirkmishes being reported in others. you would be suprisee.
