And the Bankers look to be back in town as goals from Mathews Sibale and Blessings Tembo inspired Silver Strikers to a 2-1 victory over Red Lions in a Super League match played at Balaka Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The struggling Zomba based giants were wasteful in front of goal in the opening minutes as Loti Chawinga missed some clear cut chances from set pieces just close to Silver’s goal area.

The visitors’ closest chance came just after the half hour mark through Victor Limbani who shot straight to Clemment Mlomba in goals for the hosts.

Just when everybody thought the would end goalless in the first half, the Bankers got their opener.

A brilliant move from the left flank by Limbani and Timothy Nyirenda released Sibale who intelligently shot past the advanced Mlomba, 1-0.

Come second half, the battle was so intense in the middle of the park, with Chikoti Chirwa and Nyirenda battling it out for possession as the Bankers were controlling proceedings.

MacPeter Makwale saw his shot well saved by Blessings Kameza in goals for the visitors before wasting another golden opportunity some minutes later.

Red Lions won another free kick some metres away from Silver’s goal area but Chirwa fired straight at the Bankers’ defence.

The visitors then doubled their lead through substitute Tembo who out jumped Lions’ defence before heading past Mlomba, 2-0.

Few minutes later, the hosts reduced the arrears through Gibson Nkhonjera who scored from a free kick.

However, the struggling Soldiers almost pulled level through Makwale who failed to put the ball into the empty net with the goalkeeper already beaten and after 90 minutes of play, it ended 2-1 in favor of the Central Bankers.

The Bankers are now second in the standings with 16 points from 8 games.

The defeat leaves Red Lions just 3 points adrift of safety with 6 points from 8 games as well.

At Mzuzu Stadium, Civo Service United continued their bad start to the season after going down 1-nil to rookies Mzuni FC.

Victor Gondwe was the goal scorer to take his side to 4th position with 13 points from 8 games.
