The Malawi government has urged citizens to change their mindset so that the country should stop relying on donors.

Speaking during budget presentation on Friday, minister of finance Goodall Gondwe said Malawians must sweat towards developing the country.

Gondwe argued that the country’s economy rests on the shoulders of farmers who work for not more than six months in year.

“I think its high time we need to change our mindset in the way we work as Malawians for instance people work for three to four months in our fields in a year possibly a country can’t develop with this,” said Gondwe.

The minister called for need to engage irrigation farming as a way of ensuring food security in Malawi as reports reveal that half the population is food insecure.

Malawians are expect to contribute K748 billion in the 2016/17 national budget national budget that has been pegged at K1.2 trillion through tax collection.
