The Herbalist Council of Malawi says banning traditional doctors in the country cannot end attacks on people with albinism.

The development follows suggestions that traditional doctors should be banned as one way of ending the barbaric acts in Malawi that have left people with albinism living in fear.

The attacks follow a false myth that albino parts can bring luck monetary wise, with the herbalists taking part in preparing charms.

African-medicineReacting to the development, Herbalists Council of Malawi General Secretary Robins Zanizo said they are not behind the killings arguing that those perpetrating the malpractice are not traditional doctors.

“Most Malawians believe in traditional medicine because there are some disease that cannot be cured with medication from hospitals. I think banning traditional doctors will not solve the problem,” said Zanizo.

Zanizo added that the council is to work hand in hand with government to ensure perpetrators are brought into book.

The song of killing people living with albinism has been echoing in Malawians’ ears for more than two years despite authorities speaking tough against the malpractice.
