The controversial federalism calls have taken another turn as the advocates have told Malawi24 they will hold a massive nationwide protests.

In an interview on Monday, chairperson for the Forum for the Advancement of Federalism Adoption and Rural Development, Dr Binah Shaba, said that government is deliberately provoking them by failing to facilitate a referendum.

“The only thing we want is a referendum on the matter. However, despite several calls government is silent. This will result into the organization of yet another massive nationwide demonstration,” he said.

This comes against reports that federalism advocates are incapacitated and weak to succeed with the adoption of the system in the country.

Though this publication cannot independently establish the claims, some local media houses have reported that federalism calls are fast fading away owing to financial hiccups marring the movement.

Nevertheless, in response to the claims, Shaba maintained that his team is watertight and working round the clock to fight for the freedom of Malawians.

“Some speculate that we are paralyzed by the public affairs committee report. Some say we have been bribed by government. Many things are speculated but let me assure Malawians that we are still there fighting for their freedom,” added Shaba.

Federalism calls emerged into the limelight in 2014 after President Peter Mutharika attained power.

Among the notable reasons behind the calls include claims that government often sidelines the northern region when it comes to development.

On her part, government spokesperson Patricia Kaliati urged federalism advocates to revisit their decision, saying there is no tangible reason for clinging to federalism calls.

“If it is about development, our President is opening numerous infrastructures in the north this week. In fact he has pledged to continue spreading development there, then why still maintaining federalism calls,” she said.

In the meantime, nobody apart from the advocates themselves is clued up as to when such demonstrations will be scheduled.

  12. Federal government system is not bad. It loots out nepotism in all aspects, power goes to the people not politicians. It makes easy government to monitor corruption and politicians don’t access to national treasures easily its far from them
