It has been a tradition in Malawi that city councils change colours of their equipment basing on the colour that the ruling party uses.
For the two year period under Peoples Party (PP) leadership, Blantyre City Council (BCC) was seen having orange garbage collection vehicles as an honour to the PP government.
The orange vehicles were seen being spread to other councils in Malawi including Zomba city.
After the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) took over from PP in 2014, the tradition of honouring political parties still flow in council workers’ veins as now BCC has two new garbage collection vehicles which are blue. The vehicles have been donated by the Chinese government to help in keeping the city clean.
Speaking after the donation in Blantyre, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa applauded the Chinese government for the gesture.
“We really needed these vehicles, so that the council can be managing to collect garbage in all the areas on time,” said Nankhumwa.
The Chinese government has since disclosed plans to help Malawi with firefighting vehicles which will be used in the country’s airports.
