Man fined for ‘disturbing’ President Mutharika’s convoy

Ntcheu Magistrate’s Court Thursday ordered 35-year-old Precious Mnaso to pay a fine of K150, 000 or in default serve 18 months imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for disturbing a President Mutharika’s convoy at Ntcheu boma.

The court heard that on May 14, 2015 around 3:00pm, Mnaso of Masitimale Village in Traditional Authority Kwataine was driving a Nissan Vanet car, registration number NU 851 from Ntcheu Boma towards Balaka at the time the presidential convoy was about of pass.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant, Madalitso Msikiti of Ntcheu Police Station told the court that a leading vehicle of the convoy hooted to warn him to drive off the road but Mnaso did not comply until the vehicle overtook him.

“Soon after the incidence, police officers who were on patrol rushed and arrested him at Petroda Service Station where he stopped after realizing that the law enforcers were looking for him,” Msikiti told the court.

In mitigation Mnaso appealed for leniency saying he committed the offence under the influence of alcohol.

He has now paid the fine.

Passing the sentence, Second Grade Magistrate, Philip Chibwana said ignoring to respect the state president is a serious offence which attracts a fine of about K800, 000 according to Section 112 Sub- Section 1 of Road Traffic Act.-Mana

Where in the world would the convoy of the head of state be disturbed??? And left free?
