President Peter Mutharika has placed Minister of Agriculture George Chaponda in a good position to become Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate in the 2019 elections.

Mutharika has appointed the DPP Member of Parliament as leader of government business in the National Assembly with effect from May 19.
In a statement signed by Mutharika’s press secretary, the Malawi leader said the appointment follows Francis Kasaila’s role as minister of Foreign Affairs and International Corporation.
“It is necessary to allow him (Kasaila) to effectively attend to Malawi’s international affairs which often demand a lot of travelling out of the country. Therefore, it became necessary to allow someone to take over the position of Leader of the House so that both positions are given the due attention they deserve,” reads part of the statement seen by Malawi24.
Mutharika further appreciated Kasaila’s commitment during his time as leader of the house in Malawi’s Parliament.
Earlier this year Mutharika reshuffled his cabinet a development that witnessed Chaponda being redeployed from Foreign Affairs and International Corporation to Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development.
