Police in Mzuzu have warned parents to put in place safety measures and take them seriously in order to guard their children and avoid ‘unnecessary’ deaths.

The call follows the deaths of two innocent minors in Mzuzu over the past week.

DrownAccording to Martin Bwanali who is Mzuzu Police Public Relations Officer, on Saturday a 4 year-old boy died suddenly after drowning in a well at Salisbury line location in Mzuzu city.

On the material day, the boy (now deceased) and his friends were playing at his grandfather’s house. In the course of playing he went closer to the nearby well where he accidently plunged into it.

The friends rushed and informed the boy’s parents. But the parents’ effort to rescue their child proved futile as his body was in no time seen floating.

The boy’s death came barely few days after another minor – a two year-old – died suddenly after drowning in Lunyangwa River at Zumbwe area.

According to grandfather to the boy, the child’s mother went to the garden to harvest groundnuts and left the boy home with his friends.

It was later learnt that the boy left his friends and started following the mother to the garden. However, he ended up falling into Lunyangwa River where he drowned.

Postmortem results obtained at Mzuzu Central Hospital indicated that both deaths were due to suffocation.
