Govt makes verdict on Vanette, Bongo minibuses ban

Malawi government has made its decision on the proposed ban of Bongo and Vanette minibuses.

Recently, the Parliamentary Committee on Transport asked Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services to ban small minibuses particularly Vanettes and Bongos.

The Peter Mutharika administration however has turned down the calls arguing that many Malawians are doing businesses using these type of vehicles.

Government further said plans are underway to discuss with Minibus Association of Malawi to be mindful with vehicle capacities arguing that a lot of people complain of extending numbers of passengers in a minibus.

We also ask members of the public to STOP, REPORT and REBUKE JOKES ON THE MURDER OF PEOPLE WITH ALBINISM! Some people are complicit in making jokes of people with albinism. These people wrongly think their tasteless jokes are harmless.
The campaign will have photos with various messages set as feature images!

When calling for the ban, the parliamentary committee argued that small minibuses are prone to road accidents with chances of people surviving at a low rate as compared to high roof minibuses.

The committee through their chairperson Victor Mbewe said these buses are of low standard due to the way they are designed.

Mbewe further said Vanette and Bongo minibuses are supposed to be used specifically for transporting goods across the country.

  5. This is one of the wisest decisions made by this government. Most members of the Parliamentary commitees wanted to protect their personal businesses. If you compare the number of Bongos/Vannets against the number of Hice minbuses that have been involved in an accident you will be shocked to learn that for every 1 bongo/vanet that has been involved in an acceident there are 98 hice minibuses that have been involved in an accident. When you check the fatality of the accidents you will find out that hice minbuses have been mora fatal than bongos and vannets. Verify this information from police headquarters.

  28. Give minibus owners loans to buy big taxis then.you cant just ban and how will u expect then to survive. Dont make decision as if malawi is one of those rich countries where busines owners gets loan very easy. Malawi goverment is just strange, instead of finding ways to help its people, theyre always very innovative when it comes to pressing citizens even harder. Why cant you just reduce the capacity instead of banning the taxis? Help them with loans to buy quantams or sprinters then.
