Foreigners to access legal services in SA

Machinga

Malawians and other foreigners living in South Africa will now access all the legal and public services they need to navigate life in the country via a new service.

CourtLawyers for Human Rights (LHR), an organisation which provides free legal services to vulnerable and marginalised groups affected by xenophobia, with support from the Praekelt Foundation and the US Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, has launched a service called Help@hand.

Help@hand is providing foreigners with information about their legal rights in South Africa and gives them a platform to report any issues they may be facing.

Foreigners can access information on permits, health, education and unlawful arrest. Users will also be able to report corruption, xenophobia and arrests.

To access the service, foreigners need to dial *120*8864*1538# on any network and legal experts will provide them with help to their problem and the network providers will deduct airtime for the service.

The service is currently available in English, Kiswahili, Somali, French and other languages

Help@hand launched last week at the Lawyer for Human Rights Johannesburg offices.

  1. One thing for sure is that noone has ever been as free in a foreign country as they could be at home. While in a foreign country, u need to utilise all the available opportunities to your benefit. ” East, West….Home is best.

  3. This is not enough to make somebody confortable as far as am concerned. One can expose himself here and throw himself in danger. There are tens of thousands of foreigners who r abused, can these pple help all of them???

  5. It remains to be seen if the xenophobic government will be supportive on this. The Human rights lawyers have always been there during xenophobic attacks and other cruel acts against foreigners but nothing happened.
