In her remarks on Friday at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, BEAM founder Gertrude Mutharika expressed concern over high school dropout rate of girls in the country.

“Now is the time to speak out against early marriages, and with more actions and bring our girls back to school when they fall pregnant,” said Mutharika.

Mutharika proceeded by saying that BEAM sees education as one of its cores of work as they consider education as a key aspect for Beautifying Malawi.

Chief Kachindamoto of Dedza assured Mutharika that she will make sure to bring back girls to school and that all needs for girls and their families are met.

Speaking at the same function, BEAM Chairperson Mayamiko Mwinjiro said that they noticed the gap existed on their focus area of education which was high dropout rate among girls. He said when girl child fall pregnant especially those in rural areas they end up being housewives as they lack support, guidance and mentorship.

“We want to help out so that these girls can realise their dreams. Our target is to send them to school up to form four and then train them in entrepreneurship so that with skills they can run small scale businesses,” said Mwinjiro.

The K2.5 Million will carter for girls’ school fees and the other money would be used for starting up small scale business. Every household is expected to get K100,000.

Twenty five girls have been selected from five districts of Mzimba, Thyolo, Phalombe, Balaka and Dedza.

  1. There are over 200 children at mtaya (rubbish dump sites) in Lilongwe alone. This is where you need to invest in education. More so, that’s where your core mission is. The children in these sites have never been into a classroom and are growing with animal instinct, very dangerous animals.Consider this, mum.

  2. A good move but the money is too little. There are too many girls and with the money in question there Will be alot of corruption practice in the process.
