National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) has called on government to consider increasing the allowance package for nurses in the country.
Speaking at Nchalo in Chikwawa district, NONM president Dorothy Ngoma said the current package of allowance is a mockery to the nurses considering the depreciation of the Kwacha against major international currencies.
“We petition government to revise upwards the following, allowances that nurses and other health care workers get: Professional allowances which is currently at Mk1,500/month; LOCUM allowance which is at Mk1,300 for day duty and Mk1,500 for Night duty,” said Ngoma.
Ngoma added that government should consider sponsoring nurses whenever they want to go for further studies. The NONM president also highlighted the need to address the hiccups that have rocked the health sector.
The challenges include lack of houses for nurses both in the cities and rural areas and unavailability of safety and protection measures for the care providers which if not in check has predisposed many to contracting infectious diseases like Tuberculosis and HIV while in their line of duty.
Ngoma however assured the general public that the nurses will continue working hard to meet patients’ needs despite the numerous challenges facing the health sector.

Why nurses only? How special are they? Doctors, Teachers, Policemen, Ground labourers, Guards, Cleaners and everybody in the civil service must be concidered.

Government leaders do not consider their people, but their aims lie much on how they can accumulate government’s wealthy to be theirs. Give the workers what they want, dont just put your big foot on that bag of money because its not your’s but its for malawian people so give them back to them, the real owners. if you have nothing try to take other’s wealth otherwise you will be shamed.
