Nurses demand allowance increment

National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) has called on government to consider increasing the allowance package for nurses in the country.

Speaking at Nchalo in Chikwawa district, NONM president Dorothy Ngoma said the current package of allowance is a mockery to the nurses considering the depreciation of the Kwacha against major international currencies.

Ngoma: Says nurses are being ill treated.

“We petition government to revise upwards the following, allowances that nurses and other health care workers get: Professional allowances which is currently at Mk1,500/month; LOCUM allowance which is at Mk1,300 for day duty and Mk1,500 for Night duty,” said Ngoma.

Ngoma added that government should consider sponsoring nurses whenever they want to go for further studies. The NONM president also highlighted the need to address the hiccups that have rocked the health sector.

The challenges include lack of houses for nurses both in the cities and rural areas and unavailability of safety and protection measures for the care providers which if not in check has predisposed many to contracting infectious diseases like Tuberculosis and HIV while in their line of duty.

Ngoma however assured the general public that the nurses will continue working hard to meet patients’ needs despite the numerous challenges facing the health sector.

  2. Dorothy is speaking on behalf of Nurses not physicians, Teachers,or any other profession…All these profesions have organisations or regulatory bodies dat can speak 4 them…u can’t expect her to speak 4 other professionals…Teachers, physicians e.t.c if ur organizations can’t speak 4 u,they have failed you…Don’t blame it on Dorothy Ngoma…She’s a ”Professional in the Making.”

  6. Government leaders do not consider their people, but their aims lie much on how they can accumulate government’s wealthy to be theirs. Give the workers what they want, dont just put your big foot on that bag of money because its not your’s but its for malawian people so give them back to them, the real owners. if you have nothing try to take other’s wealth otherwise you will be shamed.

    1. It means you dont understand hospital setting. Umangozionera patali zinthuzi. Patients stay 90% of their time with the nurses. Clinicians dont stay in the hospital or with the patient. This includes night shift. They simply prescribe and mostly they cant do what they prescribe. Vuto lake ungoganiza za clinic zongopereka LA, Panado ndi ma antibiotics. Think of a larger settting.

  29. Indeed this allowance is not much enough ,spending the whole night only to get 1,500 its really painful but on the other hand may Mrs Ngoma ask their nurses to like their job despite little payments they have,I feel very sorry rushing with a patient to the hospital but without being attended when you get there,I really get surprised seeing a nurse just passing a serious patient lying on the floor ,what is the duty of nurses when the patient is at the hospital?
