The real danger in the albino killings in Malawi

It is crisis. We may avoid thinking or looking at it that way, but the reality on the ground tells us that the abductions and killings of people born with albinism is an issue that deserves an emergency attention and action.

This is an evil we need to collectively root out of our society, for good.

When you think of the brutality that is involved in the harvesting of the body parts for rituals, the body experiences an impulsive shock.

Peter Mutharika
Malawi President Peter Mutharika met with people with albinism representatives on Thursday.

How could people be so inhuman? They murder an innocent soul, that had dreams and wishes for the future, just to try to end the poverty the person they are killing had nothing to do with.

There is a moral poverty in the killers, as well as in our society. The fact that this evil continues to happen amidst us is a testimony that we are still not doing enough to see it to its end.

We have allowed ourselves to be spectators. This is so, among other reasons, because we are not directly concerned or endangered by what is happening.

We are safe because we have the black skin which cannot be hunted for the rituals. The only time we are into the situation is when we have heard of a killing and it reaches down to our conscience.

But as soon as the news gets replaced by other trending stories, we go back to our usual place of watching what will happen next.

But we are being naïve. We have not looked at the broad origin of this issue and then understand how we all are in danger.

The abductions and the killings are not a result of a scientifically proven method that the born of a person born with albinism can be an effective charm for wealth. The killers are not operating by this. That is where the real danger is.

The thought of using the bones for rituals is a mind construction that has been placed in the people by the witchdoctors. For example, ten years ago, there was no such a thing in Malawi.

But as years came and went, the construction has managed to be established in the minds of the people and we are suffering from the consequences.

The challenge is that not all people are blessed with critical thinking. Again, some people are desperate to get out of their poverty, no matter the price.

To expect critical thinking and acceptance of poverty, and justified labour towards ending one’s poverty, from some rural folks, will be expecting too much from them. This is not looking down upon them, but an honest analysis of how our society is. The lie that bones of people born with albinism can be used for wealth charms has found root in rural areas. This is because of the lack of knowledge and poverty.

Let us go back to the real danger: The witchdoctors are winning the war over the minds of the people.

They are still an authority in some people’s lives. Whatever they say is truth and some people are always ready to put it into use. On the other hand, they too are desperate for money.

The people who take the bones to them pay them handsomely. It is a lucrative business for them.

Since it is a mind construction, they can one day come up with, for example, the thought that bones of a pregnant woman can bring wealth charms, or bones of babies, or bones of bald men, or bones of graduates, or bones of short men, or bones of tall men, or bones of light skinned girls, or bones of homosexuals, etc.

They can construct the kind of harvest they want for their rituals just for them to get paid.

Do you now see the danger? We may not be concerned today because it is on people born with albinism. But years from now, the construction may be on us and we will need others to be there for us.

You can never tell, years from now you will be the target for the rituals for who or what you are.

That is why we all need to act today. It will not only be acting for the people born with albinism, but a way of crushing down the kind of mind that thinks humans can be killed and used for wealth charms. This is the mentality we have to make sure gets rooted from us for good.

If we concentrate on only the people born with albinism, the bud will one day grow into a tree and cause other problems for us.

We can deal with this for good. There is a great need for political action. The legislation gap that exists in our laws, punishment against the perpetrators and also protection for the vulnerable people is costing us a lot of valuable lives.

Government has to take notice of these and ask both parliament and the judiciary to come up with strict measures.

The system has to be empowered to deal with this issue. We need a political will that does not show up through press briefing threats from the President, but a system that is there for the people and that makes these evil doers feel isolated.

It is possible. We have lost already lives, but it is not too late. We cannot be living this way, waiting for another murder to happen.

Our nation is better than this. Only a few individuals are involved in this, and that is where the chances of succeeding are high.

  6. I want to ask the government of Malawi to treat albinos like everyone. What I mean is that it should take this issue to Parliament so that law makers may make a law which will state that whoever kills, abducts and is found with bones of an albino should be killed. Why I am saying this is that if these people are charged with jail sentence, they don’t fear but if happens that they are charged with death sentence, they will stop this malpractice instantly.Another problem I’m seeing is that some government officials involve themselves in this evil business.Jesus is at the door willing to judge this naughty world. This is one of the signs of the final days.

  8. I agree that our measures must not be limited to public political utterances but I would not agree that public condemnation of this persecution of persons with albinism by our political leadership is ineffectual. We need to condemn this in the strongest terms and as loudly and frequently as we possibly are able to.
