Experts suspect foul play on government’s decision to end Muluzi case

Social commentators in the country have suspected foul play on government’s decision to pull out of Malawi’s former President Bakili Muluzi’s K1.7 billion corruption case.

The case failed to continue on Thursday after Anti-Corruption Bureau deputy director Reyneck Matemba who was lead state prosecutor and another prosecutor Chrispin Khunga asked Judge McLean Kamwambe to stand aside from the case.

Kamwambe granted the two the application, a move which prompted the defence team to ask the same court to discharge the case. The judge said he would make a ruling on another day.

However, one of the country’s social commentators Stanley Kenani has not been impressed with the way the case has been handled by the state.

“The Muluzi case has collapsed. Prosecutors have withdrawn. All the three prosecutors have recused themselves, apparently ‘for personal reasons.’ In all likelihood, the National Intelligence Bureau has done its work. At the beginning of this year, I said it. I said there was something suspicious behind Muluzi’s withdrawal of the case from the constitutional court. In our country, justice does not apply to the rich and the mighty,” said Kenani in a post on his Facebook page.

Muluzi and his former personal assistant Lyness Whiskey are accused of diverting public funds into Muluzi’s accounts but the two deny any wrongdoing.

We created our own loopholes in the way our government system is for alot of money to unnecessarily be syphoned. Even if we talk about tax payers money, thats totally nothing but an important question would be to find out as to “who owns the money”? Its the rich people who owns the mode of exchange in most of the cases. Tax payers are Just poor laggards who have mere numbers for their voice to be heard but are powerless. You cant fight Muluzi and Peter the current president knows exactly who to honor for the mis-deeds his late brother did to UDF. Its all piolitics of correction according to mutharika and no one can question him on that because he is wiser enough to Justify on what he is doing.

  161. Dr. Bakili Muluzi should not be denied his right to live as a free Malawian. If there is not enough evidence of the money in his account being corruptly obtained, then he is a free person. There is nothing wrong with the case coming to an end in what ever way! Malawians must also get to know the fact that not all cases that goes to the courts will end into a conviction.
