Reports reaching Malawi24 reveal that nearly half of Malawi’s population is to be food insecure following persistent dry spells that will lead to low yields in most districts of the country.
A report released last year by Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) showed that 3 million Malawians were expected to experience hunger during the current growing season.
However fear has erupted that the current figures of hunger victims are likely to go to as high as 8.5 million by the end of this year.
Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development George Chaponda has since assured Malawians that government has taken control of the situation.
Chaponda said among other measures government is implementing irrigation plans in many parts of the country.
