Carlsberg Malawi Limited will this year sponsor Carlsberg Cup to the tune of MK40 Million, up from MK30 Million in the previous campaign.

The cup which goes into its fifth year has, according to Carlsberg Malawi Limited Brands Manager on Alcoholic Twikale Chirwa, helped its consumers to interact and has been instrumental to the development of football in Malawi.

Chirwa told Malawi24 after the company made announcements to changes in the 2016 edition and signed a one year contract with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) that Carlsberg has always wanted to be part of the growth of football in the country.

Chirwa said that they therefore saw it fit to pump more funds in the cup.

He also disclosed that the champions this campaign will receive up to MK20 Million with other additions on media awards.

“We have done this towards our aim of helping the game develop in Malawi and we hope this was the way to go,” said Chirwa.

FAM executive member Daud Ntanthiko could not hide his gratitude to the development which he described as welcome.

He said that it is a good development for Carlsberg to both renew its contract with the FA as well as go into the fifth year in running the cup.

According to Ntanthiko, the package has come despite economic woes that are hitting the country and at a time other companies are pulling out of sponsoring teams and cups as well.

“Carlsberg is doing a great job. You may remember that they are official sponsors of the Malawi national football team and are helping youth leagues as well,” he said.

He promised that FAM will set aside all necessary measures to make sure that the league runs smoothly, adding that all the funds pumped in will be accounted for.

The Malawi FA says it has also set aside stiff security measures to stop hooliganism during matches.

The regional draw for the cup will be on 17th May with the national one coming on 26-27th July. The cup finals are slated for 10th September.
