The University of Malawi Student Union (UMSU) has made upgrading of students welfare and elevating the university’s standards their main priorities following decades of below par performances.

The new union made this clear after taking office three days ago. As per custom, UMSU accommodates members from the four constituent colleges of the University of Malawi; Chancellor College (Chanco), Polytechnic (Poly), Kamuzu College of Nursing (KCN), and College of Medicine (Com).

As a means of achieving success, UMSU will launch a 5 year strategic plan that among others will include problems that the organisation has been facing in its operations and the opportunities it can cultivate.

The effective leadership will benefit students in all areas, considering that it will lay down any bias traits against some colleges. The union has promised to adopt a proactive and not a reactive leadership in advancing its goals.

Unima students are expecting the new UMSU executive to address current issues affecting them. Higher tuition fees is the main problem affecting students leading to an increase in a number of students withdrawing on financial grounds.

In this regard, the new UMSU executive has an uphill to climb in achieving its goals.
