The ministry of information, communications technology and civic education has reiterated the need for Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) to create awareness on the importance of paying tax in order to deal with the problem of under collection.

Minister responsible Patricia Kaliati said this during a visit to MRA headquarters in Blantyre.

She said lack of knowledge is what is making most people not to pay tax hence the need to create awareness.

“We would like to urge the Malawi Revenue Authority to create awareness on the importance of paying tax,” said Kaliati.

The minister said there is need for MRA to work together with other parastatals in order to disseminate tax paying information.

Kaliati added that creating knowledge is important to let people understand the importance of paying tax.

MRA Director of corporate affairs Steve Kapoloma said the authority is ready to start sensitization campaigns as they are already part of the public reforms.

Over the past two months, MRA has been failing to meet its revenue collection targets, a situation which has been attributed to underperformance in domestic VAT, Excise Taxes, Trade Taxes and Corporate Taxes.
