The Machinga second grade magistrate on Wednesday sentenced a 23 year-old woman to 20 months imprisonment for stealing money and a phone.
According to court records, the woman, Mercy Nyoni, told her friends Prisca and Tinashe Malle that there was a job opportunity at Zomba State House but K15,000 was needed as a bribe.
The sisters agreed to pay the money and some days later the three left for Zomba.
On their way, the convict told the victims that she wanted to communicate with the person who was responsible for the employment.
When they got to Zomba, Nyoni told the two sisters to wait so that she could meet the man who was processing the employment.
With those words she went away, stealing the Itel phone worth K52,000 and K10,000 cash.
Police later arrested Nyoni and charged her with theft, which is contrary to section 278 of the penal code.
In court, the state prosecutor asked the magistrate to give the woman a stiff punishment so that other people should learn from her.
