The Parliamentary Committee on education has met a grouping of students in Machinga district that is advocating for construction of a secondary school in the district.

The group, University Students Association of Machinga (USAM), last month wrote the ministry of education, science and technology demanding it to build a government boarding secondary school in the district and they sent a copy to the parliamentary committee.

The parliamentary committee then decided to meet the students to hear their grievances.

In his remarks, chairperson of the parliamentary committee on education Elias Chakwera agreed with USAM that this is indeed a problem in Machinga and the committee will discuss the matter with ministry of education, science and technology officials.

“We have heard your issue and it’s a genuine concern, we will meet the ministry officials so that we can hear their side of the story,” said Chakwera.

USAM president Jonas Matope said they will be waiting to hear the outcome of the meeting between the committee and the ministry.

“As of now we are waiting for the outcome of the meeting of the committee and the ministry of education officials.

“If the ministry will not complete this project by the start of 2016/17 academic year, we will close Machinga Teachers Training College in collaboration with the locals and use it as a district boarding secondary until completion of the secondary school in the district,” said Matope.

Machinga is the only district without a public boarding secondary school in Malawi but government is constructing a structure at Liwonde that is said to be a district secondary school.

  2. Thumb up parliamentary committee on Education Science and Technology for taking the issue to a round table discussion. This social injustice has to be dealt with.

The people of machinga just want a Boarding Secondary School as is it in all other district in the country.
