Authorities have suspended tobacco sales at the Lilongwe Auction Floors this morning due to an increase in rejection rate of the leaf.

Confirming the development was the public relations officer for Auction Holdings Limited (AHL), Mark Ndipita, who said tobacco authorities have considered serious concerns of farmers who have been worrying about the high rejection rate.

Ndipita said the market has been suspended so that both the tobacco buyers and sellers should make the way forward on the matter that has angered most tobacco farmers in the country.

“It is true that tobacco sales at the Lilongwe Auction Floors have been suspended. This has come against the background that the rejection rate has now reached 71.2 percent at the auction sales.”

“Farmers expressed their dissatisfaction on the development and as procedure they normally presented their concerns to the Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) hence the suspension,” said Ndipita.

He added that a meeting between tobacco growers and TCC began in the morning.

At the meeting, they agreed to ask the buyers to reduce the rejection rate.

  4. I thought this government said Limbe Leaf Tobacco Company is the one spoiling the market? Its a shame that things are not improving with the JTIs, Malawi leaf and the others. Now I think its high time you deal with this from the roots not just the stem of the tree. And you will observe that each time tobacco market opens Malawi kwacha appreciates a dollar, why????

  6. What tobacco farmers should understand is not about growing tobacco and get money without meeting required standard. This is business everyone needs profit don’t force companies to buy tobacco which is below standards.Improve your quality and then blame the companies if they are not buying well.

  15. When Govt is run by Clueless Leaders, these are the results. You cannot force Buyers they have a choice to reject it or not.The problem here is the Gvt which has no vision.Tobacco is a dying crop .We saw this years back, Amati dzenje kuliwonera patali Sintha Njira. Some Advice has been given to intensify Irrigation and Mining and be supplemented with,Tourism, Tobacco,Legumes,Cotton but political Leaders are sitting phwiii in offices,Myopic leaders, they cant see outside the Box.Where is the Greenbelt Concept ? Presiden Peter work on this fast. Waterboards cant tackle irrigation they dont have the capacity.Right now the taps are dry in many parts of the Cities, what more with Irrigation,.Call for Stakeholders meeting to map the way forward. We have resources in Malawi but we have wrong people in wrong positions. You have a Mute Cabinet.A Cabinet that cant formulate Development Policies.A Cabinet that is afraid of ATI Bill.A Cabinet that has stolen MBC for Propaganda tool for Dpp.A Cabinet full of Recycled politicians who have Thieving Saliva and have black spots on their backs.Mr President put politics aside and aim at developing malawi.Put the people first who employed you kick out Recycled politicians who have failed to deliver and have made malawians Poorer.Tobacco is a dying Crop .What next mr president,? Greenbelt,Mining,Tourism, Legumes,Cotton,Chamba.Act now now.

      1. Malawians believe in living the past other than the present. Humans need to be resourceful when their survival is threatened, however this is not the case with Malawian citizens.
Malawians have been brain washed for a long time since The Dr H Kamuzu Banda era therefore one wonders whether they will come to their senses.
Malawi has natural resources which can be diversified in may ways to make the country economically sustainable but nobody seems to come up with the right knowledge to expound them.
I hope both the ruling party and the opposition parties sit together and come up with collective ideas which can bring a constructive change for the beloved country Malawi.

    1. The government doesn’t force anyone to take part in tobacco growing, we do it 4 our own risk. Leave the government alone none of its business, criticize it in other issues not tobacco.

    2. If it is not the government then who’s to blame? Who puts the price tags?who encourages the farmers to grow tobacco?I believe the government is supposed to protect it’s citizens when it comes to the sales of all commercial crops
