Man rapes teenager he volunteered to protect

Brian Banda, 26, who was working as a volunteer child protection officer for Ntchisi district, has been jailed after he repeatedly raped a girl he was supposed to be protecting.

The first grade magistrate court in Ntchisi on Tuesday sentenced Banda to 12 years imprisonment for raping the 16 year-old girl.

crime (2)State prosecutor, Sergeant Austine Daudi told the court that the convict sexually abused the teenager from February to April this year at Katsika village in the district.

The state prosecutor further told the court that Banda lied to the girl that he was going to marry her in future.

However, the girl mustered enough courage one day and told authorities who reported the matter to police.

Daudi asked the court to give Banda a stiff punishment to deter would be offenders adding that the convict was supposed be at the forefront in protecting children.

First grade magistrate Dorothy Kalua slapped Banda with 12 years imprisonment with hard labour.

Banda hails from Katsika village, T/A Kalumo in Ntchisi district.
